Swami Vivekananda Industrial Training Institute (Rameshwaram)

The Industrial training institute was an result of Post Tsunami activities The Industrial training institute was an off shoot of Post Tsunami activities that CCD was involved with, in the region. The need was felt to train the local fisher folk to do the small repair and maintenance work of their boats, motors and other fishing equipment to reduce the dependency on experts.

The main objective of setting up an institute was to ensure that the fisher folk are self sufficient in terms managing their boats and other equipments. The courses were started in 2005-06 with 36 students. The students were taught diesel mechanism, Petrol Mechanism and Auto electrician. A short term course on Cell Phone technology and Hardware technology was also conducted.

In the year 2006-07 the ITI was formally launched after getting the necessary approvals from the state government. Today there are over 100 students registered for the courses. The courses are meant primarily for the fisher folk but are open to others also. This year new courses on 2 & 4 wheeler mechanisms, and marine diesel mechanism have been started. 

In the coming years CCD plans to establish a village knowledge centre in collaboration with MSSRF, Chennai. The ITI will be equipped to be the nodal centre for execution of Coastal Community Development Programme, which is an outcome of the Sethu Samudram project launched by the state government in the district. CCD will be executing this programme on behalf of the government.
