Adharam Energy Private Limited (AEPL)

Energy Solutions is AEPL's dictum. Providing energy solutions to the backward Ramnad plains in southern Tamilnadu state was just the beginning. Adharam tied up with global energy major British Petroleum with the intention to create a sustainable business model to supply clean and affordable energy solutions in rural India.

Today Adharam’s operations have spread to 100 villages in Virudunagar, Madurai, Sivagangai, Dindigul and Nagercoil districts of Tamil Nadu and Osmanabad in Maharashtra. 85 women have been identified in Tamil Nadu known as “Jyothi” to sell the stoves. Oorja was designed as a smokeless and efficient biomass stove. The Jyothis sell these stoves along with pellets made from agricultural waste such as coir pith, tamarind shells, cotton stalk, maize core and casuarina seeds.

This new product saves up to Rs 240 per month when compared to LPG stoves and reduces the dependency on wood in case of regular choolahs. There were initial hiccoughs with the design and usability of the appliance but over the period with regular feedback from customers the appliance has been fine‐tuned and set for greater sales.

In order to understand the customer base better a survey was conducted and the following Sales indicators were arrived at:

• Consumer base of 16500 Oorja&LPG in bothMadurai and Osmanabad

• Off take of Pellets more in Rainy season

• Cooking pattern variation between Osmanabad andMadurai
